Dear Malaysians,
The humanitarian crisis due to the current violence in Gaza is hitting children and women most. Over 800,000 children have been exposed to extraordinary levels of violence and insecurity, some 1,600 have been injured and more than 300 children have died. Gazan children who have survived are experiencing unimaginable trauma every day, cowering from fear and suffering from stress-related health problems such as asthma.
In order to make them feel less alone and so that they know that people in Malaysia at least are thinking about them, I am launching, along with UNICEF, a project called To My Friend in Gaza (Untuk Kawan Ku di Gaza). The idea is to invite Malaysian children to send letters, postcards, drawings to children in Gaza to tell them that they are thinking of them, wishing them well, praying for their safety and that this terrible war will end soon.
The letters can be sent to me at 48, Jalan Terasek Dua, 59100 KL and I will get them translated into Arabic. The original letters plus translations will then be handed over to UNICEF Malaysia who will then send them over to UNICEF in Egypt to be handed over to children in Gaza. I believe that along with the medical and food supplies needed for the relief of the Palestinians in Gaza, there is also a need for moral support.
I hope that you will support this small initiative by encouraging your children and other children you know to write these letters. Just imagine what a child in Gaza will feel opening such a letter from their friend in Malaysia!
